What is the summer slide? “Summer slide” is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. There are many ways to help sliding during the summer. Reading and practicing math for as little as 15 minutes a day makes a HUGE difference in your child's education. Be creative.... practice basic math facts while riding in the car. Listen to audio books. Read while relaxing by the pool. Have the kids help you cook. Practice telling time by writing down start and stop times for commercials and favorite TV shows. All of these simple activities will help keep their brains going over the summer.
Students have access to Reading A to Z (RAZ kids), Education Galaxy, and iStation over the summer. Check your child's folder for their usernames and passwords for these websites.
We also have links to fun and educational websites on the For Students page of our website.
Want to reduce screen time and still avoid the summer slide? Check out our library page of the website for a list of businesses that offer prizes for reading during the summer. Mansfield ISD is operating a Literacy Library for all MISD students enrolled in Pre-K through 4th grades.
Need a library card to check out books at a local public library? Both Burleson and Mansfield have great libraries. Check out the links below to see what you need to get a library card.
